Domain name extensions written on to the side of coloured boxes

A domain name is a human-readable name used to access a website.

The two parts of the domain name are the "name" and the domain extension.

The domain name is the name you choose to represent your website, whereas the domain extension is the last part.

We can register over 430 different domain extensions; some of the popular domain extensions we register are: -

  • .com
  • .uk
  • .co.uk
  • .me.uk
  • .org.uk
  • .org
  • .net
  • .biz
  • .co
  • .info
  • .gov.uk

There are domain extensions which represent a certain country, a certain activity or are more general, here's a few more examples: -

Business-oriented domains include: - .ltd, .limited, .business, .company, .shop, .email, .store, .agency, .bingo, .consulting etc...
Food and Drink domains include: - .bar, .beer, .cafe, .coffee, .cooking, .fish, .kitchen, .recipes, .pizza etc...
And for hobbies: - .band, .club, .dance, .dog, .fitness, .garden, .horse, .photography, .yoga, .games...

...and the list goes on and on.

When you purchase a domain name, you aren't purchasing the domain name itself, you're purchasing the right to use the domain name for a certain amount of time, which is usually 12 months.  If you don't renew your domain name it will expire and someone else could take ownership of it.

The price to register a domain name varies by the domain extension and by the supplier also called the domain registrar.  We keep our domain name registration and renewal prices as low as possible and we're very competitive for example a .co.uk is £10 per year, a .com it's just £17 per year, but some premium domain names can run into the hundreds of pounds per year and some of the most sought after domain names and extensions can run into the thousands of pounds per year.

Why not have a look at our dedicated web hosting site for a complete list of the domain extensions we can register, visit www.albany-hosting.co.uk and click on "Domains".

When choosing your domain name, ideally it should reflect your brand or trading name, and both would be ideal. Domain names that reflect the type of activity of your website will also benefit from a higher ranking on search engines.  See our page on SEO or Search engine optimisation for more information.
